restored bread oven

In the 19th century, houses in the countryside had a separate building that contained a bread oven. The oven would have been used on a daily basis to bake bread for the family. The oven was a brick dome surrounded by a fairly standard limestone and terracotta building.

It was constructed away from the dwelling because of the risk of fire. Logs would be set alight and reduced to charcoal. The embers would be pushed aside and the day’s bread put in. Today this property can still boast to have one of these bread ovens which as been renovated. Today it can cook pizza.
